You are My Sunshine – a threat if ever I heard one!

“I’ll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me and love another
You’ll regret it all some day”

lyrics from ‘You are My Sunshine’

In Australia, it is estimated that one woman a week is killed by the man who once declared his ‘love’.  Often these women were told things similar to the lyrics of ‘You are my Sunshine’…thinly veiled threats.  I’m not the first to feel this way, Crying out for Justice pointed this out in 2013 (where comments highlight other abuse anthems) and perhaps due to the popularity (and ease of singing)  many people have chosen cognitive dissonance with the more disturbing lyrics.

I’ve posted before about my dis-ease with current pop music; Music to Live By  There is power in music, even bad music.  Does it reflect society or inform it?  Are you concerned about what your kids are listening to?  Do they listen to it for validation? or does listening to it influence them?  Which comes first?
