About the artwork

The magnificent woman came to The Birth Map when it was time to create a cover for the book.

The cover image needed to portray a confident woman; she HAD to have a head and be looking up. Using a pencil sketch was artistically appealing, and allowed for the image to be any woman. It also symbolised ‘pencilling it in’. To pencil something in is to retain the ability to change it later. In birth preparation, we consider our options in advance, ready to make decisions based on the circumstances as they unfold.

The magnificent women images were sketched by Emma Butler, and belong to The Birth Map.

The map and lettering used in the book and game, were created using the sketches of the pregnant women.

Very sadly, when first introducing The Magnificent Woman on Facebook, she was deemed to be ‘against community standards’. The dot points in the book pay homage to the Magnificent Woman.
There are two cover options for the book. One features the Magnificent Woman, and the other uses the coloured map.
