About the artwork

The magnificent woman came to The Birth Map when it was time to design the book’s cover.

The cover image needed to portray a confident woman; she HAD to have a head and be looking up. Using a pencil sketch was artistically appealing and allowed the image to depict any woman. It also symbolised ‘pencilling it in’. To pencil something in is to retain the ability to change it later. In birth preparation, we consider our options in advance, ready to make decisions as circumstances unfold.

The magnificent women images were sketched by Emma Butler, and belong to The Birth Map.

The map and lettering used in the book and game were created using the sketches of the pregnant women.

Very sadly, when The Magnificent Woman was first introduced on Facebook, she was deemed ‘against community standards’. The dot points in the book pay homage to the Magnificent Woman.
There are two cover options for the book. One features the Magnificent Woman, and the other uses the coloured map.
