First devised in 2014 by Catherine Bell, this was the embryonic birth map. Catherine, doulaing as bellabirth, saw that birth was not as random or unpredictable as we were led to believe. With a scientific and questioning mind, liking to visualise possibilities and know a full story before coming to a conclusion, The Birth Map made sense. As she shared her method with more people, she found that others, too, could benefit. Mothers, partners AND care providers. By 2019 the concept had become a book and a game soon followed. The book was evaluated in The Birth Map Study, earning Catherine her PhD and showing that The Birth Map could facilitate communication, enhance experience and aid decision making in maternity services.
